In Irish mythology whoever was first to eat the flesh of the salmon of knowledge would receive its wisdom. Finnegeas the Druid caught it in the pool at the source of the Shannon. He asked his apprentice Fionn to watch over it while it was cooking over the fire but not to eat it. While it was cooking  his shin blistered and Fionn put his thumb on it. Burnt his thumb and sucked it thus being the first to taste the salmon and receive its wisdom.
