David Phillips was born on January 8, 1944 in Flint, Michigan. A desire to make things rather than representations of them led him from his early training in drawing and painting to sculpture. In 1963, Phillips received a scholarship to The Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio majoring first in advertising before switching to painting. He then spent four years at Cranbrook Academy of Art, receiving a BFA in painting, 1967 and a MFA in sculpture, 1969.
#31 Bones of the Earth
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I knew I wanted to work at this site when I first came across the long horizontal ridge of granite. The granite was like a stone spine emerging from the forest floor. Working with a generator, compressor and diamond saw, a pattern was incised along the stone then lead panels were hammered and fastened to the existing granite. A smaller stone was moved near the path to extend the axis of the
spine. I wanted the site to remain wild, thus enhancing the sense of discovery and mystery.
